The spirals represent the souls coming together with torches to set alight the galley. Up Helly Aa celebrates the end of long winter nights. There is much emotion in this portait, both in the execution of the medium and within the face of the subject. This image gives a lot of texture as the pain was still wet when I photographed it. The expression in every sense of the word delivers hunger and desire at the same time on behalf of both the artist and the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subject is a dear friend who lives in hardship but never lets it get him down. I said I would paint his portrait and, one day I would sell it, and send him half of the money. The original is not yet for sale, however half of the proceeds from these prints will be sent to him.
